Beyond the headlines of conflict, a silent casualty looms over Ukraine – its lush and vital forests. Deforestation, an often overlooked consequence of war, leaves lasting scars on the environment, impacting ecosystems, biodiversity, and the well-being of communities. In the case of Ukraine, the ongoing conflict has triggered a significant loss of its forest cover, presenting a complex environmental challenge.

Forests, known as the lungs of the Earth, play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. In Ukraine, these green havens are now faced with the harsh reality of war-induced deforestation. The conflict has led to increased timber harvesting, both legal and illegal, driven by the need for resources, funds, and sometimes as an unfortunate byproduct of the chaos.
Illegal logging, a shadowy consequence of war, has surged in the absence of effective governance and law enforcement. Armed groups and opportunistic individuals exploit the turmoil to extract valuable timber, further depleting Ukraine’s already strained forest resources. This rampant deforestation not only contributes to habitat loss but also amplifies the risk of soil erosion, landslides, and disruptions to water cycles.
According to Ukrainian state institutions and forestry experts, hectares of forest were cut down for commercial gain or to strengthen defense positions without compensation. Satellite images show swaths of former forests left treeless after the invasion.
