Canvas LMS as a Tool for Quality Education in Ukraine during War

This study, led by Iryna Liashenko from Sumy State University (SumDU), Ukraine, focuses on the role of the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) in enhancing the quality of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instruction for PhD students during emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war. The research explored the challenges of teaching EAP in such crises and evaluates the effectiveness of Canvas LMS in supporting educational quality in the Ukrainian context.

The 21st century has presented numerous challenges to higher education. This has led to a reevaluation of teaching methods, especially in post-graduate courses like EAP. In the context of Ukrainian higher education, especially during the Russo-Ukrainian war, ensuring educational continuity and quality is essential. Canvas LMS has emerged as a prominent platform in meeting these challenges by providing a structured online learning environment for students. The study evaluates the efficiency of EAP instruction on Canvas LMS, focusing on student feedback and best practices. The study also aims to offer evidence-based recommendations for improving policy related to online education during emergencies.

Several challenges have been documented in delivering EAP courses during emergencies. These challenges can be categorized into various domains, such as mental and emotional well-being, technological issues, and instructional support. For example, students often face difficulties concentrating and managing their time effectively, exacerbated by the uncertainty and stress caused by crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russo-Ukrainian war. Additionally, pedagogical challenges arise due to the lack of in-person interaction, insufficient teacher training for online instruction, and limited understanding of diverse pedagogical approaches. The research highlights the importance of platforms like Canvas in mitigating these challenges by promoting collaboration, student engagement, and effective course delivery through various digital tools.

Strengths of Canvas LMS
Canvas LMS is highly regarded for its user-friendly interface, cloud-based functionality, and its ability to facilitate both synchronous and asynchronous learning. According to scholars like Duin (2020) and Carroll (2016), Canvas supports the flipped classroom model, allowing students to engage with materials at their own pace while providing ample opportunities for interaction through discussion boards, assignments, and quizzes. These features foster engagement, motivation, and collaboration among students, which are critical components of high-quality education during emergencies.

Moreover, Canvas LMS promotes inclusivity by offering a wide range of tools for active student participation and providing a safe space for teacher-student communication. Its comprehensive grading system and integration with other digital tools make it an effective platform for both teaching and learning during crises.

Policy Recommendations
This study recommends that policymakers and educators focus on improving the digital infrastructure and training teachers in the use of online platforms like Canvas. The ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war has significantly impacted Ukrainian higher education, and many institutions face challenges related to mobility, technological access, and human resource limitations. Policymakers should aim to improve international collaboration, support teacher development, and enhance student engagement through online platforms.

This study contributes to the broader discussion on how online platforms like Canvas can be leveraged to improve the quality of higher education, particularly in times of crisis. The findings offer valuable insights for educators and policymakers seeking to ensure that doctoral students in Ukraine and other crisis-affected regions continue to receive high-quality education.
